Hobart Book Village Festival of Women Writers welcomes Ginnah Howard once again!
Author and educator, Ginnah Howard is described as a “Catskills wordsmith”. Howard is a Catskills writer whose fiction includes people, frustratingly flawed and familiar people. These are people who can become as invisible against the awe-inspiring mountain vista as they often are in ultra-urban New York City.

Four O’Clock Flowers speaks to Ginnah Howard Ginnah discusses her most recent non-fiction work, “I’m Sick Of This Already: At-Risk Learning in A High School Class,” a searing and sensitive account of a year in a special needs classroom in upstate New York.
In her three novels, Night Navigation and Doing Time Outside and Rope and Bone, Ginnah Howard has peopled a gritty Catskills landscape. She neither falls into the trap of romanticizing rural, small town culture nor ridiculing it or demonizing small town people. Though her characters are seriously ill and deeply troubled, Howard does not harp on pathology.
For Festival 2016, Ginnah Howard will present the workshop, Startled Essays: On keeping a writer’s notebook & writing essays using the electricity from these “jolts” as catalysts for essays. Participants will read a few short examples and will share some “jolts” from their writer’s notebooks. There will be time to write a “startle” essay draft and share some of these with the group.
